Subject: January Prayer Letter

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
 
A new year has begun, at least according to one calendar. In the liturgical calendar that governs the life of the church, the new year began five weeks ago with the start of Advent. New Year’s Day falls right in the middle of the twelve days of Christmas, a time set apart from the normal rhythms of daily life, when we celebrate God’s coming among us as a helpless child. Once again this year I’ve had the opportunity to appreciate living in a context where most institutions shut down from before Christmas until after Epiphany.

Subject: November prayer Letter

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Greetings from Guatemala. All Saints’ Day, November 1, is a holiday here. Most Guatemalans spend the day decorating the graves of their loved ones and eating traditional food. The markets and cemeteries explode with color. The flower supply is down this year and the prices are up. The heavy rains in mid-October caused significant damage to the flower crop. Of course, much more than flowers was lost. The official death toll here in Guatemala stands at thirty-eight. The rains have stopped for the most part, but the effects continue to be felt.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

September has begun. In Guatemala, September is celebrated as the "Month of the Fatherland". Central America gained its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. As always, there will be lots of parades with marching bands. Here in Quetzaltenango, the Independence Fair lasts more than a week.
